Strengthening Character Education Through Family Engagement

Bridging the gap between traditional values and modern life to raise the next generation of leaders.

Traditional Storytelling

The Foundation of Character

Across Ghana, families have historically been the primary institution for character formation. Core values such as respect, honesty, humility, responsibility, reciprocity, cultural pride, and fear of God were traditionally transmitted across generations through storytelling, shared domestic responsibilities, family rituals, and guidance from elders and the wider community.

However, this intergenerational transmission of values is increasingly under strain. Socio-economic pressures, long work hours, urbanization, academic demands, and the rapid expansion of digital technologies have significantly reduced opportunities for sustained parent–child interaction. Screens now occupy spaces once reserved for family dialogue, including meal times.

The Digital Shift

Modern Busy Family with Screens

Empirical studies indicate that children spend an average of approximately six hours per day engaging with screens across devices, often displacing shared family time. Research further links increased screen exposure to reduced parent–child conversational engagement, suggesting that while families may reside in the same household, meaningful dialogue is declining.

"Consequently, many parents express concern about their limited capacity to intentionally support their children’s moral and social development within the constraints of modern life."

Diaspora Families

For Diaspora Families

These challenges are compounded. Children growing up outside their country of origin are often exposed to cultural norms and social expectations that differ from those of their home communities.

Research shows that some diaspora parents resort to sending children back to their country of origin in an effort to preserve cultural identity and values. While well-intentioned, this strategy can disrupt parent–child bonds and further reduce opportunities for consistent, intentional value transmission.

T

Tension

Development Doesn't Pause

Children’s development does not pause in the absence of intentional guidance.

Peer Pressure and Social Influence

The Silent Curriculum

Whether families intervene deliberately or not, children continuously absorb values, behaviors, and priorities from their surrounding environment. When foundational values are not actively reinforced within the family context, they are often replaced by peer norms, digital media influences, and globalized cultural narratives that may conflict with local or familial values.

Classroom and Education System

Limits of Formal Education

Formal education systems are primarily structured to deliver academic content—literacy, numeracy, science, and examination outcomes. While schools play an essential role, teachers are often constrained by large class sizes, standardized curricula, and limited capacity to address individual character development needs.

As a result, the responsibility for moral and character education is increasingly and unintentionally outsourced, despite evidence that family-based learning remains one of the strongest determinants of long-term behavioral outcomes.

Opportunity

Technology as a Bridge

There is a growing opportunity to complement formal education systems by strengthening family-based character education through structured, accessible, and culturally responsive tools.

What if parents and guardians—regardless of location—had a guided mechanism to:

  • Identify and prioritize values important to their family
  • Reinforce these values through age-appropriate learning
  • Facilitate meaningful dialogue without pedagogical expertise
  • Translate learning into shared, practical family actions
  • Establish consistent habits for long-term development

"The goal is not increased screen exposure, but intentional, structured engagement that strengthens family bonds and reinforces values."
